If you haven’t watched the sun set from the Casco Bay Bridge, you should. If you’ve already done this, you should do it again.

Yesterday I decided to check out the Western Prom and discovered the Western Cemetery. I was surprised at how old and run down it looked. There were gravestones scattered everywhere, with many leaning against trees for support. I though the tombs looked interesting, covered in green and boarded up with bricks. I read that when the Longfellow tomb was opened it was empty, with no account for where the bodies are today.

Portland Bucket List

Over the past year I have developed a Portland Bucket List for myself. It’s compiled of many different things, some that cost money and some that don’t. I’ve been doing a pretty good job with the free things, but currently holding back on the ones that require funds that I don’t have at the moment. Here are a few things I still have to check off.

1. Tour Shipyard

2. Go to LFK

3. See a show at Port City Music Hall

4. Tour Allagash

5. Walk around the Western Prom

6. Go to a TweetUp

7. Go to a Sea Dogs game

8. Eat sushi at Miyake

9. Go on a First Friday Art Walk

10. Visit the Victoria Mansion

Does anyone have any suggestions of things I should add to this list?

I stumbled upon the Custom House Wharf the other day and was a little creeped out by it… in a good way. As I started walking down the wharf I saw the harbor fish market, which seemed like a pretty popular spot. But as I walked further down the wharf it started to look more abandoned. Some of the buildings looked really run down and you could see holes in between the buildings and the water below. It was an interesting and strange thing to come across and I quickly left because I felt like I didn’t belong.

One beautiful summer afternoon, I decided to adventure over to the Eastern Promenade and was pleasantly surprised. One of the things that I love about Portland is the way you can go from the busy streets of downtown to the beach in a matter of minutes. I was very excited to find the East End beach and the walking trails around it. The Eastern Prom is filled with great spots to read and interesting things to explore, like the old railroad bridge. Needless to say, I think I will be spending much more time there in the future.

Today the Great Food Truck Race filmed its season finale in Portland. Having seen the show before, and being a lover of good food, I decided to make my way to the Old Port and check it out. I decided to give my money to Seoul Sausage, a truck featuring Korean-style BBQ. The line was long, but it was worth the wait. I got a burger served with Kimichi garlic and jalapeño aioli. In short, it was amazing.

Yesterday was the 26th Annual Southern Maine Pride Parade and Festival. This was my first experience at such an event, and I was very surprised to see how many people came to show their support. There was a diverse group of people, both marching and watching, and everyone seemed happy to be there. As a believer in equality, I was very happy I went.
